the legend

the Legend of Demons road. Huntsville Texas a quaint college town. but back in 1985, there were storys floating around about a road.. a Road that every one was warned to stay off of. the storys and events reached a fever pitch till even the sherriff's Department came to the campus to warn people to stay off that road at night.

storys of Dark satanic rites, sacrifices. ghosts and demons. vanishing hitchhikers, storys of traveling that road at night and seeing homes that werent there during the daylight. of finding you had driven ten miles more than the road actually ran. storys of the Goat man who would attack if you parked near either of the two old cemeterys on the road.

Demons road runs north and south connecting two state highways. during the day your drive takes you past pastures, piney woods and homes set way off the road. but at night... at night some say a light fog will roll in and you find yourself driving past abandoned homes. or see people lurking in the woods on other side of the road. and if you should take the old path to the oldest of the two burial places youll find yourself surrounded by the dead.

back in 1890 some say, that a Farmer was dragged from behind his plow and slaughtered in the woods by something dark called from hell. wrapped in mist, it prowls the piny woods with fire in its eyes. seeking flesh and blood to feed on.

its said that its victims are seen at night standing in the woods along side the road. a warning to those who would stop and explore.

but in 85 things began to happen, " I was driving with a date down the road. doing the usual, telling her the storys to get her scared so I could comfort her later. when I noticed a diffence in the light outside. it was darker somehow. Ive driven that road a hundred times, and I can tell you that it wasnt the same road.

out in a pasture, I saw an old home with a candle flickering in the window. only thing is buddy, there isnt a house in that pasture. not since ive lived here." the witness later claims that he the drive took almost twenty minutes longer than usual.

then the storys of Satanists began, pentegrams burned into the grass in front of an old abandonded barn, animal bones scattered around. eye witness accounts of Masked and robed figures running thru the woods on the edge of the Oldest Cemetery. people vanishing out there never to be seen again.

the path to the old cemetary is long and winding. with old oaks overhanging the narrow rutted path. spanish moss danging and blowing in the wind as you pass. the place is straight out of a horror movie. tombstones tilted or fallen, dead leaves that blow around in the occasional wind. " We went out there on a dare, and Johns roommate. Billy saw something in the woods. well we didnt hang around but left becuase somethign was moving around in those woods that night. but billy went back, they found his truck but no one ever saw him again"

by the summer of 85 the Sherriffs department wanted every one who didnt live there to stay away from that road. with only vague warnings about satanists and it not being safe.

" we drove down there one night late summer, and there was a tree across the road. Kelly got out his pistol and we got out and moved it. it had been cut down. we drive maybe another two miles, passing the old cemetery and found a thicker tree down across the road. well we werent stupid something was going one. so we turned around and went back. and found another tree across the road where we had cleared it. people were moving around in the treeline to either side of us. so Kelly backs up and and we all get our seat belts on, then he guns it, ramming that suburban into the tree and sending it flying." the eyewitness's didnt stop to see who might have been in the woods.

the storys never stopped people from going out there. wanna be psychics prowled the cemetary in packs. running for their lives when they got spooked. Frat boys went out on dares or for initations. Soriorty girls went there with dates to be scared. townies couldnt resist hoping to catch sight of the walkind dead or the Demon of legend.

for a while when the fog rose, and the moon was dead. people would swear they would see something dark shrouded in a cloak of fog, gliding like a hunting cat thru the pastures and the woods. past the ghosts of its earlier victims. they would watch, then flee when those eyes of fire in the mist would turn towards them. and the reek of rotted meat would stream out from the fanged maw of the Demon of Robbins road.

hehe..this reminds me...I and a bunch of kids, still all in school..got so spooked at exactly midnight when we went for some fun in a cemetery...one moment it was a beautiful starry sky..the next instant there was fog everywhere...the bunch of kids got scattered...and strangely...no one could hear a sound of calling or yelling until that person was right next to you..it was like a sudden audio mute...the fog was so thick that you could only see one step in front of you...after a long while, we got the whole group together again and left that place in total silence..everyone was deep in thought..no one said a word all the way home...

Glad Yall liked it.

Marliz.. Ive seen fog spring up like that before. it is creepy. Id bet its even more so in a Cemetery.

Thanks Billy.

Wayne IM thinking about a few more hubs over Texas hauntings and legends LOL I used to have a thing for going to those places just to see. like Blue light cemetery in Houston. the haunted shop in Old town spring.

Theres a place where the trinity river runs into Galveston bay, where legend has it Jean Lafette buried his treasure and three men went insane digging for it. and one died of fright. the survivors claimed that someone or something chased them off. me and some friends canoed down the Trinity to that area just to see it. spooky as all get out under a full moon. the week it took to canoe there was worth it in the end. LOL.

Theres another spot near Nagadoches where a Spanish lady and her escorts were killed by indians, all the treasure they were escorting was hidden and has yet to be found.. but its said their ghosts still haunt the woods guarding the Ladys ghost and the hidden treasure.

what can I say it was a hobby for a lot of years LOL

I am going to guess that this story is 100% made up. It sounds like the typical Hollywood horror film. All this talk of dangerous Satanists. In truth, Christians are far more dangerous than Satanists ever could be.

outdoorsguy Hub Author 23 months ago

actually no its not. in so far as this was the story floating around town and the college campus back in 85. the sherriff did warn students off the road for the reasons in the story.

satanic symbols and animal bones were found out there.

might have been a joke might not have. point of fact, there were several satanic mass storys in the news back then. one such was near houston, in an old potters cemetery. and people were warned away from it at nigth for public safety.

that said. I cant speak for the validity of it all. LOL the few times I went out there it was spooky, even saw ground fog. and scared the crap out the friends I was with. just never saw a demon, the walking dead or flying pigs. and that cemetery did look like it belonged in a old monster movie.

as the title states its the Legend of Demons road.

I will tell you this: I do hope that you realize that much of the media's claim against Satanic crimes are false. Much of it is sensationalism. It is not to say Satanists are all innocent, every religion has a few bad apples. However, much of what has been said regarding Satanists is false. For instance, animal and human sacrifice have little to do with the religion. A little research will tell you this. Regarding the story, if it is true, my guess is that the "Satanists" involved were either dabblers, or it was simply a joke.

im actually pretty aware of the FBI stats on Satanic activty and your generally correct. I also can think of a couple of murders where satanic imagery were found. the prevailing theory was it was used to try to throw the cops off. Who knows.

generally I think people saw the pentegram and the animals bones and conjured up the whole satanists and human sacrifice.

to be honest I have no idea how old the Old farmer being eaten story was.

in general I think alot of the things that happened out there were the products of practical jokes. imagination and shadows. but why ruin a good Tale with practicality LOL.

really good piece you wrote, although i am not in the US there is simularities to some of britains regional lore. A lot of the uk ghost roads relate to the leyline theory and is really interesting. Seems that at certain times and in certain conditions other worldly things can manifest in our domain. Really well researched and written i enjoyed it outdoorsguy.

glad you enjoyed it Asp. Im considering writing a piece over a story here in Tenn that is similiar to the Hound storys of Britian.

the one that really creeped me out a while back was from I think South Carolina. The pumpkin man.

hi,i have just published a hub on my paranormal experiences at work- and i mention there is an old english tale of a wild hunt where demons rise from hell and chase the spirits of the dead through the old woods- i think germany has a simular tale- i wonder if there is anything like that stateside

outdoorsguy profile image

outdoorsguy Hub Author 23 months ago

As far as I know of the Wild hunt storys started as a pre christian Celtic tale. depending on the locale the hunts are led by Hern or Cerenous the Lord of the Hunt.

id guess anywhere the ancient celts lived there might be a tale like that. but stateside not to my knowledge. at least not in any legends Ive looked into Anglo or Native American but Ill check around and let you know.

glad you liked it ris8994. Huntsville actually had alot of good ghost storys associated with it. especially the Steamboat house that had been Sam Houstons home for a while.

glad you liked it Glenn. I enjoy writing this kind of storys myself. LOL call me twisted. Theres some pretty good ones up here where I live now in Tenn. Old hillbilly witches, headless loggers, dead confederates haunting caves and creeks. the Wapum cat, The flesh eating Etwah. the Dead mother in law who follows married men and nags them to death. LOL

again glad you liked it.

thanks glad you liked it. the real name of Demons Road if I remember correctly was Robbins Road. its been a long time since the 80s. LOL. I cant vouch for the truthfulness of all the old storys. other than that was what was being spread around while I was there.

Take a peek at the steamboat house and the Hearse wagon in the Sam Houston Museum, those were said to be haunted as well. theres supposed to be a few haunted places on the Sam Houston Campus as well.

Personally I suspect most of it was just stories in the case of Demons road. But back then there were maybe six houses on the entire road and it could be creepy as all get out driving down it at night.

Moon Phaser 21 months ago

Some friends and I heard about the road today, so we decided to check it out. We went down the road for a little ways and we found a cemetary, Martha Chapel Cemetary. We turned around b/c we didn't know if it was a drive way or private road going past the cemetary. I was really hoping to see somthing, but we were afried that we would be tresspassing. Going down Bowden Road we saw many houses, but they didn't look scarey. Where we in the right place? Was Mary Chapel Cemetary right?

outdoorsguy Hub Author 21 months ago

hi Moon.

It used to be called Robbins or Robinson road, at least on the FM 1374 side. where we always went. and Yes I think it becomes Bowden road about halfway.

I think the Martha Cemetary is the newer one, the oldest one, during the 80's could only be reached by driving down an old deeply rutted dirt road just wide enough for a vehicle. had old oaks with spanish moss hanging over the road. in fact I remember branches rubbing against the side of my blazer the few times I went there.

the oldest one was, on the Robbins road side, I think. and the Martha Cemetery was on the Bowden road side.

Its been a long time since I was out there, and at the time there were only like ten or eleven houses on the entire road. if there were a few more they must have been out of view. most were on the hwy 30 side.

good luck in finding it. I havent lived there since 87. also check out the cemetery on 30 near the prison in town. its said to be heavily haunted. I think its called Oakland. just before 30 splits.

and the old Prison cemetery. plus LOL. a few places around the SHSU campus. including the old Main Building site. and supposedly when I was there a ghost on the third floor of library. The only thing I remember from that floor was a blond LOL

i just recently visited bowden road this past monday, february 21, 2011. reading all the stories and tales, my boyfriend and i were quite nervous, but ready and prepared, to check out the cemetery. we wanted to be respectful, but were also aware of any malevolent spirits that may get angry when disturbed.

we went at about 12:00pm that day or 1:00pm. can i ask for some clarification on the cemeteries? we asked some local park rangers about the stories and they gave us directions to martha chapel cemetery. we headed down bowden, and when it splits, we took a left and continued on bowden for about 3 more miles.

martha chapel cemetery was very old, and we saw plots for several members of the bowden family. there was another cemetery next to it, a newer one, even with flowers laying on the graves. is martha chapel the correct cemetery?

reading over the comments, i wonder if we missed the "old" cemetery that you are talking about. is it off robinson road where bowden road splits? should we have turned right to get to the other cemetery?

i took lots of photos and i'm excited to check them out. i felt oddly completely at peace while on bowden road. there were times i felt a little nervous and i would constantly scan the surrounding woods with my eyes, but i did not see, feel or experience anything. my boyfriend and i looked for hand prints on my car, but none were found.

do you think we went to the right cemetery?

Maria 13 months ago

We went there last night....nothing happened. Although, before we got to the road it got extremely dark and there was a creepy house. but after a while, there was a bunch of houses and cars stuff (before we hit the other road)

There have been some reported strange things, but No one has ever died on Demon's Road or disappeared, according to County Records dating back to the 1930s.

The Sheriff's Department did advised people that did not live in the area to stay away, due to complaints from residents, complaining about the horde of drunken college kids, flocking to the area at all hours of the night.

Smalltownfirefighter 7 months ago

We responded to a rollover mva just past the Robinson creek intersection. Multiple witnesses that saw the wreck also saw a man crawl out of the truck. It was well after 2am so they could only see an outline of him. On our arrival we searched the car and immediate area, and could not find him. There was no blood found so no obvious life threatening injuries were suspected. However we needed to find him simply due to the mechanism of injury. We searched throughout the night and could see any sign of him. We all grew up in these woods, we know the legends, and we know the people that live out there....what spooked us was when we returned to the pumper the truck was gone. We were later told that the dash cam on the SO units car never showed anything on that road but our apparatus. But 4 firefighters, and a deputy all saw the truck on it's roof. I don't know how to explain it but I get knots in my stomach anytime we get dispatched to Bowden rd after dark. I never go out there on my own.

huntsviletownie 6 months ago

I've heard most of the stories growing up here and I beleve the kkk use to meet out there and they told old wise tales to keep others away from their meetings. I owned the property where the barn was and we tore it down bc of kids.

just me 6 months ago

I can say for a fact some of the storys from the mid eighties were some people playing jokes on others. a couple of my friends would go out there to scare people prowling the cemetery's looking for ghosts.

I can only think of one or two really odd things that happened to me out there, that I cant explain.

IF you go their you have to go thought a green gate on the right side of the road after that good luck and DONT SAY WHERE IS THE NIGGER STATUE DONT SAY THAT i got scratched by a demon.....

Wed December 7th 2011

Just tonight a friend and I ventured to demons road...which is now bowden's road which has a split off to robinson road. We were very spooked just knowing the stories, but as soon as we turned onto the road there was a very heavy fog that was not anywhere else in Huntsville. I can't lie and say anything 'demonic' happened or that we were even brave enough to travel down the cemetery road at night. However three days ago we traveled down Bowden Rd. during the daylight and went to Martha Cemetery where there were very creepy 'graves' outside the parameters of the actual fenced in plots. They had weird stick like crosses that were made from tree branches with mason jars and flowers....which was enough to even scare us in the daylight. Tonight however there was a giant donkey in the middle of the road that scared us shitless when we came over the hill and could not see its face right away. It looked like a freaking demon for like 2.5 seconds...then made us laugh at ourselves. The road has a lot of houses on it now but most are rundown and not very welcoming except for like 2 or 3. Tonight we also saw a weird burning pentagram-ish shape behind some trees.....weird. Needless to say we got out of there safe and overall more scared by the 'ledgend' than an actual demonic road....

FUN TIMES THOUGH! Maybe we will have more fun next time....

When i transfer to SHSU this fall, I plan on taking a leisurely stroll down the road, video taping and debunking this bs. There are no ghosts, no demons, no spirits, no souls, and certainly no gods.

I used to live in Huntsville, and visited this road frequently, day and night, i traveled a lot and it is actually a nice shortcut between the two highways. I would also go out there to watch meteor showers since it was so far away from the city lights. Let me tell you, strange things do happen in this spot.

MARCH 23RD, 2012 ME MA BOYFRIEND AND MA FRIEND AARON AND ALEX WENT TO DEMONS ROAD/DEMON'S ROAD. WE GOT LOST A LIL BIT BUT WE MADE IT TO DA MARTHA CEMETRY I THINK ITS CALLED WE WALKED THROUGH IT, NOTHING SCARY DEMONIC ANYTHING OF DAT SORT AT ALL. SO WE GO AND SIT AND DA DIRT ROAD IN FRONT OF DA CEMETERY WE R TALKIN AND LAUGHING DEN WE SEE A FIGURE WALKING TOWARDS US AND IT DISAPPEARS SO WE FORGOT BOUT DAT. SO WE GET READY TO LEAVE AND I TELL MA FRIEND AARON TO TAKE A LEFT TO SEE WHERE DAT ROAD TAKES US. I DID SEE AN OPENING TO MA RIGHT BUT WE DIDNT THINK OF ANYTHING BUT WE STOPPED AT DA DEAD END WHERE DA BLOCKS US FROM GOING ANY FURTHER. WE ALL CONGREGATE IN DA CAR IF WE WANNA HOP OVER DA BAR AND GO WALKING WE AGREE. SO WE ALL JUMP OVER DA BAR AND START WALKING DEN LIKE MAYBE 10 SECONDS INTO WALKING I START SMELLING AN ODOR OF DECAYING ANIMALS. IT STARTED GROWING STRONGER DEN 2 THINGS HAPPENED ONE IT STARTED GETTING COLDER DA MORE WE WALKED TO DA END OF DA FIELD AND DEN A TREE POPPED UP OUT OF NOWHERE ON DA LEFT SIDE OF US. SO I SAY LETS TURN AROUND AND LEAVE EVERYONE AGREED WE ALL FT SOMETHING REALLY SCARY IN DA WAY IT GOT COLDER AND DEN DA TREE JUST APPEARS OUT OF NOWHERE. SO WE START HEADING BACK TO HUNTSVILLE AND WHEN WE PASS DA CEMETERY A LIL WAY FARTHER DOWN MA BOYFRIEND SEES A GUY STANDING ON DA EDGE OF DA DIRT ROAD ABD WE JUST LEFT. BUT JUST THOSE FREAKY THINGS HAPPENED TO US. SO WE KIND OF BELIEVE IT SOMEWHAT.

Me and my bro went down that road this weekend we were meeting my cousin who fishing at a lake or pond type deal past the old cemetery dnt know what it was called but we were having to very slow because of the thick fog we hit something and heard a yelp we got out to investigate and there was nothing there so we got back in the car and and found our selves in the cemetery and you have to turn to get in it and we were clearly going straight we were spooked and we just left and continued down the road to the lake we fished for a good 1 1/2 hours until we left as we were heading back I was looking at the cemetery 4 crosses burst into flames behind the fog we freaked out and kept driving and before we hit paved road there was a line of people stairing or I think because I didn't see their faces but the rest of the way it was fine ...... And by the way the barn that kids would go to scare their girls was not torn down it was burned because a few kids came blazing in their and claimed a dead (black) guy being hung so they drove back and told every one they went back after calling the police and the guy was gone only a very old dry rotted rope remained so the kids torched it that's what happen so u sure as hell didn't own
